| Madsen, Clifford J., Madsen, Clifford J. Sr. of Marmora, NJ went home to his Lord on June 23, 2010. Clifford was born in Atlantic City on September 28, 1918, and had lived in Pleasantville, NJ and Linwood, NJ for many years before moving to Marmora, NJ. He worked in Soloff’s Deli as a teenager and Shraft’s Restaurant in Philadelphia and New York City as a young man. Cliff was the owner of Valentine’s Bar in the 40’s. Those were zany fun times with the old Atlantic City entertainment crowd, an after hours club, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Frank Sinatra to mention a few, plus entertainers from the Million Dollar Club, the Hialeah Bar and the 500 Club. After selling Valentine’s, Cliff was hired by the Atlantic City Press on January 4, 1954, fifty years later, he still loved it. Cliff started as Classified Advertising Solicitor. By 1963, he was promoted to Retail Advertising Manager. In 1975 he assumed the role of Advertising Manager for Ocean County office and it was during that decade he initiated the paper’s insert program. He returned to the Pleasantville headquarters in 1981 to accept the position of Co-op Manager and later rose to the position of National Advertising Manager and also served as National Advertising Support. Cliff’s long history with the company and its clients has earned him tremendous respect in the paper’s market area and proved immensely helpful in forging long-term relationships for the paper. Cliff was quoted saying about what attracted him to his work at The Press, “I like talking to people. It becomes a challenge to make your goals.” Major/National Advertising Manager, Larry West said “Cliff is a true gentleman. He has a very big heart and people just adore him.” Cliff was a member of the N. J. Press Association and the PA Press Association. Cliff received the first award given by the Press Association. He had been President of the Kiwanis Club, and President of the Greater Mainland Chamber of Commerce, which started Trans-Fair in 1977, the largest air show in the country at that time. He has been involved with projects such as initiatives for offshore oil drilling and an initiative to keep the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center in Southern New Jersey. Cliff was a member of the Masonic Club and the Church of the Resurrection in Marmora, NJ. Cliff was an avid golfer for many years at both the Atlantic City Country Club and Greate Bay Country Club. Cliff loved talking about the “Old Atlantic City days.” His best stories were about the Valentine Bar which was enjoyed by all and his days at the Press. His greatest love was the wonderful time he spent with his wife, Roberta, the cruises and places they traveled, the vacations in Florida, and the holidays with family. He will be so missed by everyone he touched. When they married, they lived in Linwood and then later moved to Marmora. He enjoyed his weekend gardening with his wife, and had much to talk about to his piers on Monday mornings. Cliff is survived by his beloved wife, Roberta Townsend Madsen of Marmora, NJ, step children, Mark Townsend (Valerie) and his children, Kyle and Brooke of Mullica Hill, NJ, John B. Townsend II of Eldora, NJ, Linda Tarves of Beesley’s Point, NJ and her children, Jessica and Shannon, and Laura Zubey and daughter Katelyn of Sinking Spring, PA, son Cliff, Jr. of Delaware and his daughter Olivia, and daughter Kathy Madsen and her children Alexa and Michael.
